Between them, the four officers had considerable experience. The two Colonels had Command Pilot status, there was an experienced Co-pilot and a Navigator. Unfortunately, the Accident Brief only identifies Colonel Upham’s flight experience, he being the Captain of the aircraft. These show that he had merely 6 hours night flying experience and less than 2 hours instrument flight in the previous six months. He had neither instrument time nor night experience in the 30 days preceding the accident. It has not been possible to determine who was actually at the controls at the time of the crash.
